FAITH 2.0 – DYLAN JAHNIG

Scriptures:
Hebrews 11:1-10
Genesis 11: 4, 31
Genesis 12 :1 – 5
Ephesians 2: 19 – 22 (MSG)

Points:
1. One Name
2. The Long Game
3. Held up in Haran
4. A Place to Call Home

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1

“Faith is being sure that something one hopes for will come to fruition.”

Faith is a journey – not something that happens at a specific moment in time.  It’s not just about achieving material possessions; rather, it’s about discovering our destiny.

1.ONE NAME

Genesis 11 – the Tower of Babel & Noah’s son Shem (building a name for yourself)

2. THE LONG GAME

God’s plan is the long game. Often He moves us away from our current circumstances in order to bring us closer to His ultimate plan for us.

3. HELD UP IN HARAN

Everyone, regardless of their background, experiences moments of confusion and uncertainty while on this journey of faith.

Abraham struggled through frustration and settled in a place called Haran before continuing his journey toward Canaan (Haran = frustration)(Canaan = promised land).

God often moves His people through what some call ‘Holy discontent’ or burning frustration, as well as human flesh.

Ultimately, the promises made by God are still before us, even if we do not always see them as fulfilled. Abraham was called to leave his homeland and trust in God’s plan for his life. By doing so, he was able to find his divine inheritance, even when it did not feel like home in the moment.

Abraham’s story highlights the importance of faith in following God’s plan, even when it seems counterintuitive or difficult.

4. A PLACE TO CALL HOME

“Embrace your faith and trust that it will lead you to your true home.”

Faith is not always easy, but rather a process that requires time and effort. True faith comes from following Jesus’ teachings and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us – in surrendering our lives to God and trusting in His plan for us.

Discussion Questions

1. One Name (Genesis 11):
– How do you interpret the idea of “building a name for yourself” in the context of the Tower of Babel and Shem’s story in Genesis 11?
– In what ways might our pursuit of significance or recognition align with or differ from God’s plan for our lives?

2. The Long Game (Genesis 12:1-5):
– How comfortable are you with the concept of God’s plan as a “long game”? Share a personal experience where you felt God was moving you towards a greater purpose in the long term.
– Discuss the tension between our desire for immediate results and God’s patient, long-term plans. How can we navigate this tension in our faith journey?

3. Held up in Haran (Genesis 11:31, 12:1; Ephesians 2:19-22):
– Share instances from your own life when you’ve felt moments of “Holy discontent” or burning frustration that led to positive change. How did God work through those experiences?
– How do you handle uncertainty and frustration in your faith journey? What lessons can we draw from Abraham’s journey?

4. Finding A Place to Call Home (Hebrews 11:1, Ephesians 2:19-22):
How has your understanding of faith evolved over time?
– Discuss the challenges of embracing faith as a process that requires time and effort. How can we actively surrender our lives to God and trust in His plan, even when it feels difficult?
