Hear Him: a 21-Day Devotional

Explore the 21-Day Devotional put together by our team leading up to our 2024 Vision Sunday:

Day One: Hear Him

“After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.” Matthew 17:1-8 NIV

In Matthew 17, the Father gives us powerful and otherworldly instruction through His interaction with the disciples in the story of the Transfiguration. Even while Peter is still speaking, He says, “This is my Son, HEAR HIM.”

In the heart of our Heavenly Father is the desire to see us find our identity as sons and daughters. The whole Gospel – the Jesus story, all the miracles, and the promise of our eternal future – is about our Heavenly Father being in communion with us, His sons and daughters. He wants a relationship with us founded upon a daily conversation that grows in intimacy.

When you settle your identity from Heaven, you overcome the insecurities you struggle with here on earth. This is the power of the Gospel story. God sends His Son to save us from our sins and ourselves and restore us to Him. And, within this restoration is the opportunity to hear from His heart.

In Matthew 17, we see a conversation between the Father and the Son, showing us what communion looks like and inviting us to live in His ways. To hear Him and walk in the fullness of His identity. To hear Him and His call to live by courageous faith.

Heavenly Father, today, we come with open hearts, longing to heed your divine instruction. You desire us to discover our true identity as your sons and daughters. Grant us grace to settle our identity in Heaven. Help us engage in a daily conversation with you, growing in intimacy. May we live by courageous faith, reflecting the transformative power of your Word. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
