THE RIPPLE EFFECT – MARK SLEVIN
Scriptures:
Luke 24: 36-53 (MSG)
Points:
1. PEACE (He satisfies the needs of their hearts by eating with them)
2. PURPOSE (He re orientates the direction of their lives by sending them)
3. POWER (He shows them His hands and feet)
- PEACE (He satisfies the needs of their hearts by eating with them)
He eats with them – intimacy/ friendship.
Here I am – you can HAVE ME!
Peace is not the absence of problems – it’s the presence of a person.
Early church lost the tomb – it was of no concern – why? Beause they had HIM.
The person you are looking for, the love you are looking for … to a world thirsting for new – Jesus says you can HAVE ME… they treated Him as if he was alive – cause HE WAS and is today – Christ in us, the hope of Glory!
- 2. PURPOSE (He re orientates the direction of their lives by sending them)
What they had seen would SHAPE their lives.
He called them WITNESSES… When you see the RESURRECTION … it changes the way you see the world!
If He is resurrected that means God is going to RENOVATE he world.
– FREE FROM THE WORLD (means as great as the material world is, it won’t have a hold on you.)
And when tragedy occurs / or you miss out on something – we can be left disappointed and in despair – but resurrection reminds us – that it’s not consolation – it’s restoration! So rest – God will restore all things… this truth gives us a poise and peace.
- 3. POWER (He shows them His hands and feet)
He showed them his wounds. Why? Because what they thought had ruined them, would bless them. God takes all the ‘bad things’ and uses all of them and turns it for our good and His Glory.
Discussion Questions
1. How does the concept of peace being “the presence of a person” rather than the absence of problems resonate with you personally? Can you share an experience where the presence of Christ brought peace in the midst of challenges?
2. The early church treated Jesus as if he was alive because they had experienced his presence and power. How can we cultivate that same sense of intimacy and friendship with Christ in our lives today?
3. Jesus reoriented the disciples’ lives by sending them as witnesses. How does encountering the resurrection change the way we see the world and our purpose within it? Can you think of a time when your understanding of purpose shifted due to encountering Jesus?
4. The resurrection signifies God’s intention to renovate the world. How does this perspective free us from being overly attached to material possessions or temporary circumstances? How can we live with a mindset of restoration rather than despair in the face of tragedy or disappointment?
5. Discuss the significance of Jesus showing the disciples his wounds as a demonstration of power. How does this concept challenge our understanding of suffering and redemption? In what ways have you seen God turn difficult experiences for your good and His glory?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for revealing to us the true source of peace – your presence in our lives. Help us cultivate intimacy with you daily. Guide us to understand our purpose as witnesses of your resurrection power. Grant us clarity and courage to live out this purpose. In times of despair, remind us of your promise to restore all things. Help us find peace in your plan for restoration. May we never forget the power of your redemption, turning our suffering into blessings for your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
