IT’S ALL ABOUT SONSHIP – DYLAN JAHNIG
Scriptures:
Romans 8: 14-17
1 Cor 2: 4-5
2 Peter 1: 17
Psalm 106: 19-20
Ephesians 2: 19-22
“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.” Romans 8:14-17
There’s a connection between fearlessness and being a son, or fear and lacking a revelation of the Father. With a greater revelation of the Father comes the displacement of fear. The fruit of sonship is fearlessness.
1. Sonship Comes from Above
You cannot give what you have not received.
“Our Father, who art in heaven. Hallowed Be Your Name. Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on Earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread..” Who was described as the Daily Bread? Jesus.
“give us the fullness of Grace – our daily bread – and forgive us as we forgive those who sin against us.”
The progression: first he feeds then we deal with forgiveness.
The love of God cannot be achieved, only received. It comes from above.
Feed / receive from the voice above (Matthew 3 & 17) vs. the voice below (Psalm 106 & 2 Peter 1)
Jesus received honour and glory from God the father when a voice came from the Heavens. Sonship comes from above. We must receive our affirmation and identity from above.
Psalm 106 – they exchanged the glory of God for the image of a bull that eats grass.
Sonship is everything. You can believe that your sins are forgiven but that you’re not a part of the family of God and you’ll miss out on being an heir. You can believe that God is big enough to cover up your past with his grace and to map out your future in His presence and Spirit and still not believe there is an inheritance for you as the family of God. Everything that was entrusted to Abraham God Says is now ours – we are heirs of the same promise given to Him in sonship.
The ultimate destination of Christianity is not Heaven, its Home (the Father) (John 14).
2. He’s Greater Than All
John 10 – “My father who is greater than all… and NOTHING can snatch you from His hand.”
We are sons and daughters and no one can snatch us from His hand. And once we realise we’re a son or daughter we realise we have access to everything.
*Sam the Uber driver
What is your Uber? A Conversation around the family table, your next board room meeting? Who is your Sam?
*The Girl from Gulu
John 1 – born not of natural descent or of human will, but born of God.
We’ve got the same DNA test – we’ve got access to the kingdom of heaven – access to the father’s table. It’s the story of the church.
Discussion Questions
1. Fear and Sonship: How does recognising our sonship in God help us overcome fear? Can you share an example from your own life?
2. Heirs with Christ: What implications does being an heir of God and co-heir with Christ have for our daily lives and future hopes?
3. Receiving from Above: Why is it important to receive our identity and affirmation from God rather than from worldly sources? How can we daily seek and receive the “daily bread” that Jesus is?
4. Security in Sonship: Reflect on John 10 and discuss what it means to you that “nothing can snatch you from His hand.” How does this assurance affect your faith? How does understanding our identity as sons and daughters of God change the way we approach life’s challenges and opportunities?
5. Considering the stories of “Sam the Uber driver” and “The Girl from Gulu,” share a moment when you felt a greater revelation of God as your Father. How did this change your perspective or behavior?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of sonship. Help us to understand our identity in You, and embrace Your love and security. Guide us by Your Spirit, remind us of Your grace, and empower us to live fearlessly as sons and daughters of a good Father. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
