This family reader is a resource designed for parents of pre and junior school-aged kids to help your family seek God together this Advent season. Join us in our Christmas series: “Everlasting Father” from the 8th of December as we look towards Christmas and the gift of Emmanuel, God with us. To the invitation of the Father – where our hearts find home.
How to Use This Reader
- Set aside 10–15 minutes daily or weekly during Advent to read together as a family.
- Take turns reading the scriptures and reflections, and then discuss the questions together.
- Close in prayer, asking God to draw your family closer to Him.
Week One: The Light Has Come
Theme: Jesus is the Light of the World who brings hope and joy.
Scripture: Isaiah 9:2
“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.”
Reflection:
- Ask: What happens when you turn on a light in a dark room? (It pushes the darkness away!)
- That’s what Jesus did when He came into the world. He brought His light to push away the darkness of sadness, fear, and sin. He came to bring us hope and joy!
Family Discussion:
- Where do you see darkness in the world?
- How can Jesus be your light when you feel afraid or sad?
Activity:
Make a list of ways your family can “shine Jesus’ light” this week—helping a neighbour, sharing with a friend, or showing kindness to someone at school.
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for being the Light of the World. Help us shine Your light to others. Amen.
Week Two: What a Saviour
Theme: Jesus is our Savior who came to rescue and restore us.
Scripture: Luke 2:11
“For unto you is born this day…a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.”
Reflection:
- Ask: Who is your favourite superhero? (Discuss their strengths.)
- Jesus is the greatest rescuer of all! He came not to save us from pretend dangers but to save us from real problems—sin and separation from God. He came because He loves us so much!
Family Discussion:
- How does it make you feel to know Jesus came to save you?
- How can we say “thank you” to Jesus for being our Savior?
Activity:
Write a thank-you card to Jesus as a family, listing the ways He has helped you. Display it where you can see it all week.
Prayer:
Thank You, Jesus, for coming to save us. Help us always trust in Your love and grace. Amen.
Week Three: The King and His Kingdom
Theme: Jesus is the King who invites us to be part of His kingdom.
Scripture: Isaiah 9:6
“The government will be on his shoulders, and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Reflection:
- Ask: What do you think makes a good king? (Discuss fairness, kindness, etc.)
- Jesus is a King like no other! He rules with love, peace, and justice. He invites us to be part of His kingdom, where everyone is loved, and all things are made right.
Family Discussion:
- How is Jesus’ kingdom different from the world we live in?
- What can we do to show others what Jesus’ kingdom is like?
Activity:
Make paper crowns and write “Jesus is King” on them.
Prayer:
Jesus, You are the best King we could ever have. Help us live as part of Your kingdom every day. Amen.
Christmas Eve: The Christmas Story
Theme: Jesus is God with us, showing His love by coming close.
Scripture: Matthew 1:23
“They will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God with us.’”
Reflection:
- Ask: What’s your favorite thing about Christmas Eve?
- Tonight, we celebrate the best gift of all—Jesus! He is “God with us,” which means He is always near. When we look at the baby in the manger, we remember how much God loves us.
Family Discussion:
- What does it mean to you that Jesus is “God with us”?
- How can we celebrate Jesus tonight?
Activity:
Draw/set up a nativity scene together as a family. As you place each piece, talk about what it reminds you of in the Christmas story.
Prayer:
Thank You, God, for sending Jesus to be with us. We celebrate His love tonight. Amen.
Christmas Day: A Weary World Rejoices
Theme: Jesus brings joy and rest to our hearts.
Scripture: Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Reflection:
- Ask: How do you feel after a big day, like Christmas? (Tired, happy, full, etc.)
- Say: Jesus came to give us more than happiness—He came to give us joy that lasts forever. When we feel tired or sad, He invites us to come to Him and find rest.
Family Discussion:
- What brings you joy on Christmas Day?
- How can we share Jesus’ joy with others today?
Activity:
Share what you’re thankful for about Jesus.
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for bringing joy to the world. Fill our hearts with Your love and peace today and always. Amen.
