As we step into the new year, we’re reminded of the timeless wisdom found in Matthew 6, where Jesus teaches us not to worry about our needs. This powerful message encourages us to shift our focus from anxious thoughts about the future to trusting in God’s provision. Just as the lilies of the field are clothed in splendor without toiling, we too can rest in the assurance that our Heavenly Father cares for us. The key lies in seeking first His kingdom and righteousness, allowing everything else to fall into place. This scripture invites us to examine our priorities and align them with God’s will, fostering a deeper sense of peace and purpose in our lives.
First Things First: A Fresh Perspective for the New Year
As we step into a brand new year, there’s a palpable sense of excitement and possibility in the air. The calendar has turned, offering us a clean slate and a fresh start. But along with the anticipation, there may also be a hint of uncertainty. What will this year bring? Are we ready for what lies ahead? How can we make the most of the opportunities that await us?
In the midst of these swirling thoughts and emotions, it’s crucial to pause and ground ourselves in timeless wisdom. The words of Jesus in Matthew 6 offer a powerful reminder:
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?”
This passage invites us to shift our perspective. Instead of getting caught up in anxiety about the future, we’re encouraged to trust in God’s provision and care. Just as the flowers of the field are adorned with beauty without toil, we too are cherished and provided for by our Creator.
But how do we practically apply this truth to our lives as we embark on a new year? The key lies in putting “first things first.” By intentionally prioritizing what truly matters, we can align our lives with God’s purposes and find peace in His promises.
Here are three practical steps to help us put first things first:
- Prioritize His Presence
In the busyness of life, it’s all too easy to relegate our spiritual practices to the margins. But what if we made a conscious decision to start each day by connecting with God? This doesn’t have to be complicated. It could be as simple as following the “JOY” prayer method:
- Jesus: Thank Him for who He is and what He’s done.
- Others: Lift up the needs of friends, family, and those around you.
- Yourself: Bring your own hopes, dreams, and concerns before God.
Other options might include reading a devotional, spending time in worship, or going for a prayer walk. The specific method isn’t as important as the intentionality behind it. By prioritizing God’s presence first thing in the morning, we set the tone for the entire day.
- Map Out Your Priorities
Imagine you have a large glass jar, some big rocks, and a collection of smaller pebbles. If you want to fit everything in the jar, what’s the best approach? The answer is to start with the big rocks. Once those are in place, the smaller pebbles can fill in the gaps.
Our lives are much the same way. If we don’t intentionally make space for our most important priorities (the “big rocks”), they’ll easily get crowded out by less significant activities. Take some time to prayerfully consider what your “big rocks” should be for this year. These might include:
- Regular family meals together
- Consistent church attendance and involvement
- Time for personal growth and development
- Acts of service or volunteering
Once you’ve identified these priorities, write them down. Put them somewhere visible as a constant reminder of what truly matters to you this year.
- Plan Accordingly
It’s not enough to simply know our priorities; we need to actively schedule them into our lives. In our digital age, this often means blocking out time in our calendars for the things that matter most. If family dinners are a priority, schedule them as recurring events. If you’re committed to church attendance, make sure Sunday mornings are protected from competing activities.
Remember, if you don’t proactively plan for your priorities, other things will inevitably fill that space. Be intentional about guarding the time for what’s most important.
This principle applies to all areas of life. If physical health is a priority, schedule your workouts. If financial stewardship matters to you, set reminders for when you’ll give or review your budget. By planning ahead, you’re much more likely to follow through on your intentions.
As we embrace these practices of prioritizing God’s presence, mapping out our priorities, and planning accordingly, we position ourselves to live with greater purpose and peace. Rather than being tossed about by the winds of circumstance, we can move forward with confidence, knowing that we’re investing in what truly matters.
The beauty of this approach is that it frees us from worry about the smaller details of life. Jesus continues in Matthew 6:
“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
When we put first things first—seeking God’s kingdom above all else—we can trust that He will take care of the rest. This doesn’t mean life will always be easy, but it does mean we can face each day with the assurance that we’re building our lives on a solid foundation.
As you step into this new year, take some time to reflect on your priorities. Are you putting first things first? Are you making space for what truly matters? Consider how you might implement these three steps in your own life:
- Prioritize His presence daily.
- Map out your most important priorities.
- Plan proactively to protect those priorities.
By doing so, you’ll be well-positioned to embrace all that this year has in store. May you find joy, purpose, and peace as you seek God’s kingdom first in every area of your life.
