Grit & Grace
We love to talk about grace—and rightly so. Grace is God’s unearned favor, His empowering presence, His kindness poured out. But grace doesn’t stand alone.
Running parallel to grace is grit—the God-given tenacity to keep going, to pioneer, to build, to break ground even when the odds are stacked.
Abraham didn’t just walk in favor. He forged ahead through barren lands, family tension, and uncertainty. He carried grit in his bones—and guess what? That’s your inheritance too.
We are sons and daughters of promise. Not born to shrink back or live defensively, but to build, to plant, and to establish.
Three Marks of a Tenacious Spirit
1. Tenacity starts with conviction.
Jeremiah 20:9 says, “His word is like a fire shut up in my bones. I cannot hold it in.”
What’s the fire in your bones? What’s the holy discontent that won’t let you settle for the status quo?
2. Tenacity isn’t limited by perfect conditions.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego didn’t wait for ideal circumstances. They stepped into the fire. Why? Because faith doesn’t wait for certainty—it moves when God speaks.
And we, the church in South Africa, don’t need perfect policy, politics, or promises to move forward. We carry the greatest power on the planet. That’s enough.
3. Tenacity always ends in victory.
Galatians 6:9 says, “Do not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time you will reap a harvest if you do not give up.”
Victory doesn’t always look like ease. Sometimes it looks like perseverance. But if we hold the line, we will see the fruit.
A Word for the Church
Let’s stop waiting to be hit so we can show how strong we are in standing back up.
Let’s lead. Let’s pioneer. Let’s take ground.
Let’s be the nation where family flourishes, where innovation stirs the globe, where creativity pulses through the veins of the church.
Let’s be tenacious with a fire in our bones that cannot be held in.
Grit while there’s grace. Guts because of His goodness.
Not back-footed. Not reactive. Not passive.
But front-footed, faith-filled, and fiercely focused on the future God has for us.
Eugene Peterson once wrote about “a long obedience in the same direction.” That’s grit and grace together. That’s tenacity born of conviction, not ego. Not striving to please God—but leaning on His power to live the life we’re called to live.
So here’s our prayer:
May the Spirit of God ignite a fire in your bones.
May your steps be steady, not swayed by fatigue or fear.
May you lead—even when it’s hard.
And may you reap a harvest—because you did not give up.
Amen.
